What’s the difference between Workout Minutes and Exercise Minutes?

Workout Minutes are minutes from workouts specifically recorded in Apple Health. For example, if you record a 30-minute strength workout with your Apple Watch or another fitness app, that counts as 30 Workout Minutes.

Exercise Minutes are determined by Apple and can include activity throughout your day that meets Apple’s criteria for exercise — even when you haven’t started a workout. A brisk walk, for example, may contribute Exercise Minutes.

The easiest way to think about it:

  • Workout Minutes = time from workouts you actually record.
  • Exercise Minutes = activity Apple recognizes as exercise.

If you want WorkoutFirst to require a dedicated workout each day, choose Workout Minutes. If you want any qualifying physical activity to count toward your goal, choose Exercise Minutes.
